The CSV Community Project started in October 2009 with the purpose of partnering with local, national and international institutions to promote sport as a tool for development and peace. Using the appeal of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, the project was promoted both in South Africa and overseas through the establishment of partnerships with:Â The United Nations, Western Cape Peace Network, the University of Stellenbosch, University of Western Cape University of Cologne (Germany), University of Missouri (USA), University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), Interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence for Sports Science and Development (ICESSD) of UWC, City of Cape Town Sport and Recreation Department, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Western Cape, Sport Trust, South African Football Association (Safa) and Ubabalo e Africa.
Today the project is well established and involves more than 20 000 primary and high school learners from 20 schools in the Cape Town Area.
At the moment we are organising :
- Friendship games: Weekly events among primary and high schools with the objective to build bridges and promote wellness. We attend an average of 500 kids per week, boys and girls.
- Assisting with after school sports: By training community leaders, teachers, parents, students and local coaches in different sport codes to deliver after school activities: Soccer, Rugby, Netball, Handball, Futsal, Volleyball and Tennis. At the schools we are working with, more than ten thousand kids are receiving training every week.
- Building Sand Courts in local schools: Creating a sustainable way to deliver sport, recreation and physical activities at schools. At the moment we built seven courts around Stellenbosch and the plan is to have ten by the end of 2019. We are building at previous disadvantage schools that didn t have any other sport facility. The courts are been used to play rugby, soccer, volleyball, handball, netball, for recreation and life orientation classes. More than seven thousand students are getting the benefits from the facilities, boys and girls.
